Track and trace identification systems allow companies to track the movement of products from raw materials to sellable products, through distribution, and right to the end user. Although the concept is not a new one in many industries, recent initiatives by the FDA and the Department of Defense have put new pressures on suppliers to uniquely identify their products starting in the manufacturing plant and out to the end user — with the goal of gaining real-time visibility to the process, product and resources.

RFID has also put a renewed focus on track and trace applications, as this technology has the potential to vastly improve visibility and provide a more efficient use of assets, reduced inventory and reduced cycle time. Ultimately, this creates lower cost structures and increases profit margins.
